about us
Jamil Miah and his staff welcome you to Denley's Essence of India. As flagship venue of a popular and award-winning restaurant chain, we are highly proud of our cuisine - our chef won the 2007 Exeter Curry Chef competition against stiff opposition - and we hope you enjoy your visit.

Denley's Essence of India occupies a long-established premises, originally Topsham's dairy, and both Denley's and Essence of India are popular within Topsham and the wider Exeter area.

We originally called our restaurant Saffron, but in 2007 we rebadged it as Essence of India for a unique name reflecting our style and cuisine.

Building on earlier refurbishment of Denley's to a comfortable and modern wine bar style, we also refurbished and expanded Essence of India to a capacity of 150, making us the largest curry restaurant in Devon. We are one of the few Topsham restaurants with dedicated parking.

Shazon is top curry chef

"SHAZON Miah, a 23-year-old chef at Denleys Essence of India in Topsham, has been named Exeter Curry Chef 2007. Shazon beat 18 other entrants with his tamarind chicken dish, Hyderabadi pilau rice and a side dish of Goan Sabji. Owner Jamil Miah is delighted with the result as the restaurant was runner-up last year."

Record Number Enter Exeter Curry Chef

A record eighteen local curry chefs will be turning up the heat on Monday (5 March) in an effort to qualify for the final of Exeter Curry Chef 2007.

The competition has proved so popular that organisers Exeter City Council has had to stage an elimination round to whittle the competition down to a final six on 12 March.

In the elimination round and the final, not only will entrants have to create a dish with aroma, texture and taste, they will also have to source the ingredients locally – where possible - and prepare it in under two hours.

King of curries Jamil is hot stuff

"Jamil Miah has been crowned the curry king of Exeter. Mr Miah has just scored a memorable win in the city's Curry Chef of 2006 awards. His Spice Magic in Fore Street, Exeter, took top place. Denleys/Saffron in Topsham and Chadri's in Heavitree Road, were second and third respectively."

A rickshaw ride to curry heaven

"DENLEY'S Essence of India opened a new car park in true Asian style - with a rickshaw ride.

Topsham Rugby Club has leased an area of its car park to Denleys to help them cope with booming business - Denley's are also the club's sponsors.

And customers recently got to travel from the car park to the restaurant by rickshaw. The club's fixtures secretary, Dave Tanner, joined restaurant owner Jamil Miah on the ride from the car park to Denleys.

Mr Miah said: "It's a good partnership between Denleys Essence of India and Topsham Rugby Club. It gives the rugby club finance and the restaurant 60 car parking spaces." Dave Tanner said: "It is a mutually beneficial arrangement - our car park is often empty during the week."
